Great question, and this is an important detail for a smooth installation.
You can use screws other than bugle head screws, but there’s one critical requirement:
The xxxx head must sit completely flush with (or slightly below) the surface of the InstallStrip.
Why this matters:
If the xxxx head sticks up at all, it will interfere with the back of the slatwall panel. The panel will not sit flat against the InstallStrip, which can cause alignment issues and reduce overall strength.
Best options:
-
Bugle head screws (most common and recommended)
-
Flat head screws
-
Self-countersinking screws
Not recommended:
-
Washer head
-
Pan head
-
Wafer head
Those styles typically protrude above the surface and will prevent the panels from resting properly on the strip.
So the short answer: yes, alternatives can work, as long as the head profile allows the xxxx to sit flush. That’s the key to a clean, secure install.
Let us know what surface you’re mounting into (wood studs, concrete, steel framing, etc.) and we can recommend a specific xxxx type.
